SMPS

What is SMPS ?
  • Short for Switched-Mode Power Supply, SMPS is a power supply that uses a switching regulator to control and stabilize the output voltage by switching the load current on and off.
  • These power supplies offer a greater power conversion and reduce the overall power loss.
  • It is to convert wall-voltage AC power to lower voltage DC power.

Advantages of linear power supply :
  • Simplicity.
  • Quiet Operation & Load-handling Capability.
  • Low Cost.

Disadvantages of linear power supply :
  • Range of application.
  • Number of Outputs.
  • Average Efficiency.

Advantages of Switching Power Supply:
  • Higher Efficiency.
  • Low cost and size.

Disadvantages of Switching Power Supply:
  • The design is more complicated and time-consuming.

  • SMPS regulates and provide reliable output irrespective of variation in input voltage for proper functioning of our computer.
  • A battery charger does not give constant voltage to battery.
  • A switching regulator or any regulated power supply for that matter maintains constant voltage at its output.
